Over seventy percent of our universe is made of mysterious “stuff” known as dark energy. This dark energy, whatever it may be, is not only responsible for the exponential expansion of our universe but could cause the death of it.
But how? Well, this cosmic force has the power to propel the expansion of the universe at an ever-fast rate, enough to separate galaxies to the extent that each becomes isolated in its own universe. Even worse, as suggested in 2003 by a team of theorists in Dartmouth College, the force may get stronger and eventually rip apart the fabric of space and time itself! If it this was to happen, it would be 22 billion years from now.
Fortunately for us, however, the current evidence makes such a dramatic cosmic event very unlikely. But, considering that space and time is all there there is and only oblivion “beyond it”, what would we see if it were to rip apart? If the four dimensional fabric of space and time was to “rip apart” what would it look like?
