The question of consciousness is one that has baffled some of the greatest thinkers in history for a while now. It’s one of the most fundamental questions of human existence. There can be many nuanced definitions of the word including self-awareness, sense of free will, unity and so on but the questions are always the same.
Are we really as conscious as we think we are? How can we be so sure that we’re not merely programmed by evolution in an exceptionally complex manner. After all, studies are constantly proving that free will is a mere illusion. But surely we must be conscious to some extent if we are to question consciousness in the first place, but it is clear that we don’t have conscious control over our entire brain. But how does the feeling of consciousness arise in the first place? What is the cause of it in the human brain? How does it work? Or in other terms, how does consciousness arise from seemingly unconsciousness matter?
But what if we’re asking the wrong question or perhaps it is required that we nuance our question. I’ve noticed that these questions all address our species as whole but each and every individual within the species is different. So, perhaps some of us are more conscious than others; after all some people give no attention whatsoever to any scientific studies concerning what seems to be the most important aspect of human nature. But again; what is it that makes some of us more conscious than the others?
